Murder suspect is hurt during attack
A gunfight broke out at a Highland discount store and ended on the roof of a doughnut shop Monday afternoon after a Kansas City, Kan., murder suspect opened fire on sheriff’s detectives, authorities said.
Working on a tip from authorities in Kansas City, an elite unit of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department was searching for Tommy Mackey, 38, when they traced him to a vehicle parked outside a Super 99 Cent Plus store just before 1 p.m. Monday. Detectives detained three men in the car, but not Mackey, who was inside the store.
Just after the plainclothes detectives escorted two of the salesclerks to safety, Mackey began firing at the detectives from a dark area of the store through a lattice wall, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Cindy Beavers.
Mackey, who is on parole in San Bernardino County on drug and weapons convictions, then scrambled to the roof, where he continued shooting at deputies and San Bernardino police officers, authorities said. No officers or civilians were wounded.
“Anywhere in that area of Victoria Avenue and Baseline Street was extremely dangerous this afternoon,” Beavers said. “Mackey was randomly shooting from inside the 99-cent store, shooting out toward the front of the store, and then he gained access to the roof. . . . He was running along the roof of the businesses and shooting. It’s amazing that no one was hurt.”
The fight ended when he reached the roof of the adjoining Christy’s doughnut shop and was struck by at least two bullets. Mackey tumbled to the ground behind the shop and was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where his condition was not revealed.
Mackey was charged this year in Wyandotte County, Kan., with the murder of Indio Inglehart of Olean, Mo., according to reports in the Kansas City Star.
The newspaper reported that Inglehart, 30, was found in a car in Kansas City with a gunshot wound to the head in April.
