South Bay benefits

The South Bay punk community has banded together to help Darryl Potter, a veteran nightclub promoter who’s battling cancer. Nine bands are scheduled to perform this Sunday in Torrance at the Ken Miller Recreation Center to raise money for his family. “It’s also to boost Darryl’s morale. He’s fighting hard,” says Eddie Amago, Potter’s partner in Ignite Productions. There’s also a benefit show Saturday night at a veterans’ hall in Redondo Beach. Potter has been bringing the noise locally for over a decade, and the last time I saw him, he’d just undergone surgery but was still working security for a punk show at the Vault in Long Beach. Among the bands throwing down for Potter are Instigator, D.I., Circle One, Smart Patrol, Thumper and Too Rude, who are scheduled to perform on Sunday. The Bombshells and South Bay Subs are expected to perform at Saturday’s benefit show.

Leonardo DiCaprio looked dashing at his “11th Hour” premiere after-party at the Cabana Club on Aug. 8. The actor was seen in the company of Tobey Maguire, Kate Bosworth and Adrian Grenier. . . . Cabana Club owner Chris Breed escorted Leo over to his new spot, Green Door, formerly Sterling Steakhouse. Breed owns the lounge with model Johnny Zander (the hunk Ben Stiller modeled “Zoolander” after), and he’s squired a bunch of former Teddy’s promoters (Zander included) over to the Green Door, which takes its name from the ‘70s adult film “Behind the Green Door.” . . . Bumped into Peter Storemare (“Fargo”) at the Stray Cats show at the Santa Barbara Bowl on Friday. Storemare is pals with Stray Cat drummer Slim Jim Phantom, who owns the Cat Club on the Sunset Strip. The rockabilly trio, which looks better than ever, wowed the crowd with an encore of the Sex Pistols’ classic “Something Else.” . . . Save the date: The seventh annual Long Beach Tiki Festival is set for Aug. 25-26 on the beach at Belmont Shore.
