Detroit 8, at New York 5: Carlos Guillen hit a first-inning grand slam against Mike Mussina, and Ivan Rodriguez also homered to help the Tigers beat the suddenly struggling Yankees. Justin Verlander held New York’s lineup in check, and the Tigers won the opener of a key four-game series to move back into first place in the AL Central, half a game ahead of idle Cleveland. New York, which has lost three in a row, fell 5 1/2 games behind first-place Boston in the AL East.

Kansas City 6, at Texas 2: Mark Teahen drove in the tiebreaking run on an eighth-inning fielder’s choice, and John Buck had a three-run double to lead the Royals to victory, ending the Rangers’ three-game winning streak. Ryan Braun (1-0) pitched 2 2/3 innings of two-hit shutout relief for his first major league victory. Alex Gordon homered for the Royals, and Mark Grudzielanek had three hits for Kansas City.

at Oakland 8, Chicago 5 (10 innings): Kurt Suzuki homered for the second straight game, a game-winning, three-run shot in the 10th inning, and the Athletics beat the White Sox to sweep the three-game series.

Angels 4, at Toronto 3: Kelvim Escobar shut down his former team, Gary Matthews Jr. homered and the Angels held on to beat the Blue Jays.
