What Tony Snow is really telling us

Re “White House spokesman Snow to quit,” Aug. 18

Tony Snow’s profession is communication, and he has certainly sent a clear message about George Bush’s America. Snow is leaving his post as White House press secretary, reportedly because the salary of $168,000 isn’t enough to keep him going. After all, as all the media reports mention, he has three children, and the oldest is nearing college age.

Snow’s salary is well over twice the national average, but that (plus the tons of money he made before he joined the White House and the tons he’s guaranteed to make as an author and pundit afterward) isn’t enough to send his kids through college. The message: If you’re one of those poor slugs making $50,000 or $60,000, don’t even think about it.

Oh yes, didn’t Bush threaten to veto the House bill to make college more affordable?
