Ex-attendant reportedly gave names

A former New York Mets clubhouse attendant revealed the names of major league players who bought steroids from him to baseball’s chief steroids investigator, SI.com reported Tuesday.

Kirk Radomski, who pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in April to felony charges of distributing steroids and laundering money, met recently with former Sen. George Mitchell, according to the report. He faces up to 25 years in prison and a $500,000 fine at his sentencing, scheduled for Sept. 7.

SI.com did not say when Radomski met with Mitchell. But it said the meeting may have come before July 13, when Jason Giambi talked.

Barry Bonds’ record-breaking 756th home-run ball will be sold online by Matt Murphy, with the 21-year-old New Yorker who caught it Aug. 7 saying he would be taxed on the souvenir if he kept it.

The minor league pitcher involved in the Aug. 14 fight for which Jose Offerman is facing two counts of second-degree assault after charging the mound with a bat, was suspended for his role in the incident.

The independent Atlantic League also fined Matt Beech of the Bridgeport Bluefish for hitting Offerman with a pitch. Long Island Ducks catcher Jared Price also was fined and suspended two games.

Opposing expanded background checks after the NBA’s referee betting scandal, minor league umpires voted against allowing baseball to perform credit checks on them because they aren’t big league employees.

Baseball has said that such a refusal could affect whether a minor league umpire gets a major league job.
