Verlander-led Tigers baffle Yankees, 16-0

DETROIT -- Justin Verlander found his groove on the mound, and the Detroit Tigers rediscovered their stroke at the plate.

Verlander shut down the New York Yankees with his best stuff since throwing a no-hitter while Detroit roughed up Mike Mussina and a couple of relievers in its highest-scoring game this season.

Verlander, last season’s American League rookie of the year, gave up only three hits and Brandon Inge had three hits and four runs batted in to lead Detroit to a 16-0 win over New York on Monday.

It was the most one-sided road shutout loss in the Yankees’ history, topping a 15-0 defeat at the Chicago White Sox on July 15, 1907, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Verlander (14-5) struck out six and walked two over seven innings. Mussina (8-10) lasted only three innings, giving up six runs, nine hits and a walk.

at Cleveland 8, Minnesota 3: Paul Byrd improved to 4-0 this season and 10-3 in his career against the Twins, Victor Martinez had a two-run homer and the Indians pulled off a triple play. Byrd (13-5) gave up three runs in six innings. With runners at first and second in the top of the seventh, Indians reliever Rafael Perez came on and got Mike Redmond to hit a hard grounder to third baseman Casey Blake, who fielded it and quickly stepped on the bag. Blake then threw to second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera, whose relay to Martinez at first easily beat the slow-footed Twins catcher. It was the third triple play of this season.

Toronto 6, at Oakland 2 (12 innings): Troy Glaus’ run-scoring double highlighted the Blue Jays’ four-run rally in the 12th inning and sent the A’s to their fourth straight loss. Oakland tied it in the eighth on Dan Johnson’s run-scoring single, and the A’s bullpen retired 11 straight batters before Vernon Wells and Frank Thomas singled to lead off the 12th against Alan Embree (1-2). Glaus then had the game-winning hit.

at Chicago 5, Tampa Bay 4: Jose Contreras (7-16) got his first win since June 18 and rookie Josh Fields put the White Sox ahead with the team’s fourth home run of the seventh inning. Tampa Bay starter Edwin Jackson took a 4-0 lead into the seventh before A.J. Pierzynski, Jermaine Dye and Juan Uribe homered consecutively to make it 4-3. Danny Richar then doubled before Fields’ home run against Dan Wheeler.

at Detroit 16, New York 0: The Tigers earned their highest-scoring shutout victory since a 17-0 win at Kansas City on July 19, 1991, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Angels 6, at Seattle 0: The Mariners stayed two games ahead of New York atop the wild-card standings in losing in the first of their only three home games of a 20-game stretch.
