“Spring Awakening,” the big winner at the 2007 Tony Awards, is a financial hit too.

The show, which won eight Tonys including best musical, recouped its $5-million production cost this month, producer Ira Pittelman announced Tuesday.

“Spring Awakening,” a pop musical adaptation by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater of Frank Wedekind’s classic German drama, began life off-Broadway during summer 2006 at the Atlantic Theater Company. Set in provincial 19th century Germany, it tells the story of a group of teenagers trying to come to terms with life and their own sexuality.
