Thinking water

Re “L.A.’s water savings are just a drop in the bucket,” Dec. 10

I’m not surprised that Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s call for voluntary water conservation has gone unheeded. He has not been using his bully pulpit to set an example.

Where is Villaraigosa promoting science fair contests for children on the theme of water saving? Where is he having water-saving appliances installed in his home? Where is he holding a summit with representatives of the non-English-language media to find out the particular opportunities and barriers for conservation among their readers? Where is he doing what he was elected to do?

I feel that few people realize the seriousness of our water situation. As I walked my dog one day after we had more than an inch of rain in our area, I noticed many neighbors had their sprinklers on.

Frequently I watch gallons of water flow down drains as the ground cannot absorb excess water as a result of people leaving their sprinklers running too long. I hope that with mandatory rationing, more people will conserve water in a climate that is naturally dry.
