Today is projected to be the busiest shipping day of the year, with a veritable blur of mail and packages passing through the hands of the U.S. Postal Service, FedEx Corp. and other Santa’s helpers. The Postal Service expects nearly 1 billion cards, letters and packages to be mailed today. This includes 275 million cards and letters compared with 82 million on an average day.

FedEx expects to handle 11.3 million packages, the most ever processed by its network in a single day. The Memphis-based company moves about 7 million packages on an average day.
