Faulty oven forces plane back to LAX
A malfunctioning oven that sent smoke into the cockpit of a Honolulu-bound jet Tuesday morning prompted the pilot to return to Los Angeles International Airport, and he took the unusual step of landing the plane in the opposite direction from which aircraft had been approaching the runway.
The incident caused air traffic controllers to briefly halt all operations on the two parallel runways on the south side of LAX to accommodate the Boeing 757. None of the 252 passengers and crew aboard was injured.
After declaring an emergency, ATA Flight 4755 flew in over the ocean and landed at 10:11 a.m., about half an hour after its departure. ATA spokeswoman Maya Wagle said the oven was fixed and passengers reboarded the jet about 12:30 p.m. for Hawaii.
