Council approves wind-power deals

Share

The City Council approved two wind-power agreements Wednesday that will increase the amount of renewable energy provided to residents by the Department of Water and Power. The deals will bump the amount of the department’s portfolio that comes from alternative power from 8% to 11% of overall supplies.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has pledged to raise that amount to 20% by 2010.

City officials said the agreements were reached by the Southern California Public Power Agency, of which the DWP is the largest member, and Pebble Springs Wind LLC and UPC Wind.

Plants under construction or planned in Oregon and Utah will supply electricity to 71,000 Los Angeles households when they come on line in late 2008 and early 2009, officials said.
