Did Romo pick wrong sister?

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo seems bent on proving that there is no such thing as a Jessica Jinx.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Romo showed up for his weekly radio spot Wednesday night accompanied by girlfriend Jessica Simpson, who has been blamed in recent weeks for Romo’s poor performance in a Dec. 16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Not only that, but Simpson’s sister, Ashlee, was with them.

Before Romo arrived, hosts Timm Matthews and Brady Tinker had a conversation that may ensure Romo doesn’t bring his girlfriend to any more live spots.

“So, Timm, who’s better looking? Jessica or Ashlee?” Matthews was asked.

“Ashlee,” the sports reporter answered unequivocally.

“Ashlee,” concurs his wife, Meshea Matthews. “She definitely wears less makeup.”

Trivia time

Romo posted a career-low passer rating of 22.2 in the Eagles game attended by Simpson. What is his career high?

Perfect ending

The 1972 Miami Dolphins seem resigned that the New England Patriots will join them on the list of undefeated teams, but they aren’t ready to relinquish the top spot on that list.

“We’ll be 1A and they’ll be 1B, because we did it first,” 1972 guard Larry Little said.

“Their parking spot is behind us,” 1972 running back Mercury Morris said.

The Patriots would still have a few more games to go before joining them as undefeated Super Bowl champions.

At least one 1972 Dolphins player said he would put aside personal feelings to root for whoever is playing the Patriots.

“Even the Dallas Cowboys, who I never liked,” 1972 kicker Garo Yepremian said. “I’m pulling for them.”

Rough crowd

CBSNews.com editorial director Dick Meyer recently took his 13-year-old son to watch the Washington Redskins play the Chicago Bears, but the behavior of Redskins fans ensured he wouldn’t attend another game.

“Every play was a competition to produce a more vile insult or a different suggestion about which Bear body part might be stuffed up which orifice,” Meyer wrote in the Washington Post.

“When the Redskins scored their first touchdown, four young women -- I’m guessing they were in high school -- turned around and did a little stripper’s dance that made my son blush as I cringed. Even putting aside their ages, it was too cold to bare flesh.

“Within 10 minutes of kickoff, I knew I had made a terrible mistake taking my son to the game.”

Just think if he had gone to Philadelphia.

Rough sport

The British Medical Journal reported that an Australian Rules football player was hospitalized after accidentally swallowing a beer cap while celebrating a championship by drinking beer out of the league trophy.

“They filled the premiership cup with beer and were passing it around among everybody,” said Dr. Robert Douglas, Royal Adelaide Hospital emergency department registrar.

The cap initially obstructed the man’s breathing before moving further into the chest cavity and had to be removed by endoscopy.

“This is the first one of these I’ve seen,” Douglas said. “But we see stupid stuff all the time -- it always involves young blokes, beer, girls and sport,” he said.

Trivia answer

He had a perfect rating of 158.3 on Oct. 15, 2006, against the Houston Texans -- the first game in which he threw a pass. He was two for two for 35 yards and a touchdown. His career high rating for a game he started was 148.9 on Nov. 23, 2006, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, when he was 22 for 29 for 306 yards and five touchdowns.

And finally

Ottawa Senators goalie Martin Gerber took a slap shot off his mask four minutes into the first period of a 5-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. He stayed in the game but acknowledged he was woozy.

“It shook whatever’s left of my brain cells,” Gerber said.
