Nepal’s parliament voted to abolish the centuries-old monarchy and turn the Himalayan nation into a republic.

More than two-thirds of parliament favored amending an interim constitution to end the monarchy after an agreement by the main political parties this week, Speaker Subash Nembwang said.

The vote ensures that the king will be removed immediately after elections in April for a constituent assembly charged with rewriting the constitution.
