St. Louis Coach Andy Murray commended his two goalies on their shutout of the Red Wings. Detroit Coach Mike Babcock wasn’t as impressed.

Bill Guerin scored and Manny Legace and Curtis Sanford combined to stop 23 shots Thursday in the Blues’ 1-0 victory over visiting Detroit, which was shut out for the first time in 176 games.

“We needed them to come up big and they did,” Murray said. “I was a spectator. I enjoyed the ride like everybody else.”

The Red Wings were last shut out Jan. 7, 2004, in a 3-0 loss to Boston. Calgary holds the NHL record for consecutive games without being shut out -- 264 from Nov. 12, 1981, to Jan. 9, 1985.

“A blind dog finds a bone once in a while,” Babcock said. “I mean, everything happens once in a while. Give them full credit. They worked hard. They had a game plan, they stuck to it.”

Pittsburgh 5, Philadelphia 4 -- Held without a point during regulation, NHL scoring leader Sidney Crosby had the only goal in a shootout to lift the Penguins to a win that extended the Flyers’ franchise-worst home-ice losing streak to 13 games.

Crosby had been 0 for 7 in shootouts before he beat Antero Niittymaki on Pittsburgh’s third shot. Marc-Andre Fleury then stopped Simon Gagne to win it.

Columbus 2, Calgary 1 -- David Vyborny and Fredrik Modin ended the Blue Jackets’ 133-minute 26-second scoring drought with third-period goals against the visiting Flames. Columbus’ three-game losing streak ended.

Minnesota 4, Florida 2 -- Brent Burns had a goal and an assist in the third period and Niklas Backstrom made 41 saves as the Wild moved within a point of Northwest Division leader Calgary by beating the Panthers at St. Paul, Minn.

Ottawa 4, Montreal 1 -- Dany Heatley scored his team-high 32nd goal, helping the Senators move one point ahead of the visiting Canadiens for second place in the Northeast Division.

Nashville 4, Toronto 2 -- Steve Sullivan scored a power-play goal and assisted on another as the Predators beat the Maple Leafs for their eighth straight home victory.

New Jersey 2, New York Islanders 0 -- Martin Brodeur posted his NHL-best 10th shutout, stopping 25 shots for the Devils at East Rutherford, N.J.

Carolina 5, Boston 2 -- Ray Whitney had three goals and an assist to lift the Hurricanes past the Bruins at Boston.
