Johnson leads Long Beach State

Kejuan Johnson had 19 points and six assists, and Long Beach State defeated host Cal State Fullerton, 94-84, on Wednesday night.

Aaron Nixon had 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals, and Sterling Byrd scored 17 points for the 49ers (18-6 overall, 9-2 Big West Conference), who used their seventh victory in eight games to move 1 1/2 games ahead of second-place Fullerton.

Bobby Brown scored 36 points for the Titans (18-6, 8-4), whose 15-game home winning streak ended. Brown made 13 of 24 shots, including six of 13 three-point shots. Frank Robinson had 19 points and Scott Cutley had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Titans.

Long Beach made nine of its first 18 shots and forced seven turnovers in building a 21-7 lead in the first 8 minutes 8 seconds.

But Fullerton cut the deficit to 39-37 on Brown’s three-point basket with 54.7 seconds left in the first half.

The 49ers led, 49-45, before going on a 16-4 run for a 65-49 lead with 13:18 to play. Nixon led the surge with six points.

Long Beach led by as many as 20 points as Fullerton failed to make a basket for a span of 5:45 in the second half.

UC Irvine 66, UC Riverside 61 -- Nic Campbell and Patrick Sanders each scored 19 points and Campbell made a go-ahead three-point basket with 35 seconds left to lift the Anteaters (12-15, 6-7 Big West), who won for only the third time in 14 road games.

After Campbell’s shot, Justin Bell made two free throws to pull the Highlanders (5-20, 1-10) within one point, but Michael Hunter made four free throws in the last 25 seconds to secure the win.

Larry Cunningham scored 21 points and Bell had 19 for the Highlanders.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 86, UC Santa Barbara 79 -- Derek Stockalper had 19 points and seven rebounds at San Luis Obispo and the Mustangs completed their first sweep of the Gauchos since the 1997-98 season.

San Luis Obispo (13-10, 5-5 Big West) made 15 of 30 three-point shots and shot 51.9% from the field (28 of 54).

Dawin Whiten made five of 10 three-point shots, finishing with 15 points for the Mustangs, and Trae Clark had 18 points.

Alex Harris led the Gauchos (15-8, 6-4) with 19 points.

Cal State Northridge 91, UC Davis 74 -- Thomas Shewmake scored a career-high 25 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the host Matadors.

Jonathan Heard came off the bench to score 21 points for Northridge (12-13).

Vince Oliver scored a game-high 28 points for the Aggies (4-19), who have lost seven games in a row since beating Northridge in double overtime Jan. 18.
