Nobody likes a mike hog

Perhaps the new motto for a certain British soccer team should be “You’ll never sing alone.”

Typically, player strife on almost any squad unfolds over such issues of playing time, ball possession, lack of crisp passing or women.

But karaoke?

Stories of a wild night of partying in the days before Liverpool’s Champions League game against Barcelona surfaced in the British papers. Craig Bellamy and teammate John Arne Riise supposedly got into a dispute over a karaoke contest, and Bellamy reportedly made threats to go after Riise with a golf club.

Can only imagine the way that one might have started:

How could you mangle the words to “The Greatest Love of All!”

Another song by Cher?

Nevertheless, Liverpool, the team with the famous chant, “You’ll never walk alone,” pulled it together and beat Barcelona on Wednesday. Apparently, the team that stays together doesn’t necessarily sing together.

Trivia time

What year was Liverpool FC established?

DD hammer

Guess everything comes full circle.

Darryl Dawkins, who probably raised the blood pressure of a few building officials when he shattered backboards, is now pitching for Lotrel, a high-blood-pressure drug.

They could put together the makings of an impressive “senior” hoop team with two other Lotrel celebrity pitchmen, Dominique Wilkins and Spencer Haywood.

“I still hold down the center position,” Dawkins told the Sporting News. “And I still am the best shooter.”

Asked if he could still shatter the backboard, if spotted a stepladder, he quipped, “Yeah, with a hammer.”

Ice follies

Just wondering when the “mooning” USC goalie Mickey Meyer will show up on David Letterman or Jay Leno.

But first, a word from USC officials, who issued a statement Wednesday about the now-infamous goalie, who allegedly mooned the crowd in a game at BYU on Saturday. They were quick to point out that at USC, hockey is a club sport, not a school-sponsored varsity endeavor.

“That said, and based on reports I have received, I am very upset to hear that a student member of our hockey team participating in a national tournament in North Logan, Utah, behaved in such a reprehensible manner,” said Michael L. Jackson, vice president, student affairs.

“The university does not condone this behavior. We are investigating the matter and will take appropriate action against those involved. I apologize to the hockey fans attending the game where the incident occurred and to Brigham Young University.”

Trivia answer

1892. One fact of note about that team: All the members came from Scotland, except for the goalkeeper.

And finally

No doubt there will be quotes rounded up from the likes of Michael Jordan, Andre Agassi and Sinead O’Connor, giving advice to the newly bald Britney Spears.

Kobe Bryant already has weighed in on the subject.

“You have to make sure you go with the grain, don’t go against the grain when you’re shaving your head,” Bryant told SI.com. “You have to smooth it down and grease it up, so it’s nice and shiny.

“You can’t have something that’s really bland -- it has to have a pop to it.”

Like her music should have sounded, perhaps?
