Hello Lucky, a 33-1 shot, ends skid

Trainer Eric Guillot’s second win in the Las Flores Handicap at Santa Anita was a lot more shocking than his first.

Guillot, who won the Grade III with 7-5 favorite Show Me The Stage seven years ago, got the money again in the $113,600 race Saturday, this time with a 33-1 shot, Hello Lucky.

Ending a seven-race losing streak, the 5-year-old Lucky Lionel mare wore down 17-10 favorite Selvatica in the closing yards to win by a length.

In picking up her first victory since she won the ungraded Lakeway on Aug. 20, 2005, at Retama Park in San Antonio, Hello Lucky, owned by Southern Equine Stable LLC, ran the six furlongs in 1:09.34 under Michael Baze.

Selvatica, making her first start for owner Marsha Naify and trainer Julio Canani after being purchased for $560,000 last month, finished 4 1/4 lengths clear of 24-1 shot Babe Hall.

Lava Man, who has won eight consecutive races in California, was assigned top weight of 124 pounds for the $1-million Santa Anita Handicap, which will be run for the 70th time next Saturday.

The defending champion, Lava Man will be spotting from seven to 10 pounds to the other probable starters in the Grade I at 1 1/4 miles.

Strub winner Arson Squad is next on the list with 117, then come Awesome Gem, Brother Derek, Ball Four and Molengao carrying 116, Boboman, McCann’s Mojave and Spring At Last at 115, and El Roblar, 114.

Santa Anita honored retiring trainer Noble Threewitt on his 96th birthday with a brief ceremony in the winner’s circle after the fifth race.

Relato Del Gato, an 11-1 shot who was claimed for $10,000 in November, won his fourth in a row for owner Bob Bone and trainer Keith Bennett, taking the $100,000 Phoenix Gold Cup at Turf Paradise.

Glenn Corbett rode the 6-year-old Tale Of The Cat horse, who had won his three prior starts at Turf Paradise by a combined 12 3/4 lengths, to his seventh lifetime victory in 1:07.68 for the six furlongs.

One race earlier, defending champion Capitano and jockey Danny Sorenson defeated favored Cervelo by a nose in the $75,000 Turf Paradise Handicap.

At Gulfstream Park, 7-1 shot Jambalaya defeated favored Honey Ryder and nine others in winning the $300,000 Gulfstream Park Breeders’ Cup Turf Stakes, and 6-1 outsider Twilight Meteor won the $100,000 Hallandale Beach Stakes.
