Iraqi President Jalal Talabani remained hospitalized here Tuesday after a collapse during the weekend, but he was said to be recovering well.

“He’s in good shape, fully aware and doing well,” said Saad Hayyani, Iraq’s ambassador to Jordan.

Talabani was recuperating from exhaustion and lung inflammation, his personal physician and other officials said Monday.

The physician, Yedkar Hikmat, said rumors about a heart problem were “categorically wrong.”

“This is not true at all, the president’s case doesn’t involve any heart problems. He did not suffer any heart attack. His heart is 100% good,” Hikmat said.

Talabani, 73, fell ill Sunday and was unconscious when he was rushed to a hospital in Sulaymaniya, his hometown in northeastern Iraq.

He was flown to Jordan later for extensive examination.

Talabani, a Kurd, has been Iraq’s president since April 2005.
