Bafta nominations take on a royal hue

“The Queen” garnered 10 nominations Friday, dominating the British version of the Academy Awards with nods for best film, best British film, best director, best screenplay, best actress and best supporting actor.

The James Bond thriller “Casino Royale” followed with nine Orange British Academy Film Awards nominations, and the Mexican gothic fantasy “Pan’s Labyrinth” garnered eight.

Also vying for best film honors are “Babel,” “The Departed,” “The Last King of Scotland” and “Little Miss Sunshine.”

The Awards will be handed out Feb. 11 in London.

Other nominees for best British film of the year are “Casino Royale,” “The Last King of Scotland,” “Notes on a Scandal” and “United 93.”

Nominees for the David Lean Award for achievement in direction are Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for “Babel,” Martin Scorsese for “The Departed,” Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris for “Little Miss Sunshine,” Stephen Frears for “The Queen” and Paul Greengrass for “United 93.”

Best actor nominees are Daniel Craig for “Casino Royale,” Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Departed,” Richard Griffiths for “The History Boys,” Peter O’Toole for “Venus” and Forest Whitaker for “The Last King of Scotland.”

Best actress nominees are Penelope Cruz for “Volver,” Judi Dench for “Notes on a Scandal,” Helen Mirren for “The Queen,” Meryl Streep for “The Devil Wears Prada” and Kate Winslet for “Little Children.”

Nominees in the supporting roles are: Alan Arkin for “Little Miss Sunshine,” James McAvoy for “The Last King of Scotland,” Jack Nicholson for “The Departed,” Leslie Phillips for “Venus,” Michael Sheen for “The Queen,” Emily Blunt for “The Devil Wears Prada,” Abigail Breslin and Toni Colette for “Little Miss Sunshine,” Frances de la Tour for “The History Boys” and Jennifer Hudson for “Dreamgirls.”

Original screenplay nominees are Guillermo Arriaga for “Babel,” Michael Arndt for “Little Miss Sunshine,” Guillermo del Toro for “Pan’s Labyrinth,” Peter Morgan for “The Queen” and Greengrass for “United 93.”

Adapted screenplay nominees are Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, Paul Haggis for “Casino Royale”; William Monahan for “The Departed”; Aline Brosh McKenna for “The Devil Wears Prada”; Peter Morgan, Jeremy Brock for “The Last King of Scotland”; and Patrick Marber for “Notes on a Scandal.”
