Michael D. Waxman, president of the Board of Trustees of the Los Angeles Community College District, announced Thursday that he will step down next month and relocate to Washington, D.C.

Waxman, 32, the son of U.S. Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Los Angeles), said he has accepted a job as vice president of a public relations firm. The Beverly Hills resident was elected to his first term on the eight-member board in 2001 and won a second four-year term in 2005.

The nine-campus community college district said its board will announce shortly whether it will appoint a new trustee to complete Waxman’s term or call a special election.
