Commotion over a candidacy

Re “Clinton joins 2008 race for president,” Jan. 21

I just read that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) is running for president. What next, scientists determining that people have to breathe to live? Why is this such big news, and why is the media so excited about this announcement almost two years before the next election? This is the same media that report that almost all Americans won’t get involved with the politics of an election until after Labor Day of the election year, in this case September 2008. Could it be that the media are attempting to create news?

God help us all with Clinton running for president. She just ran for reelection to the Senate and already wants out. I think she should stay in the Senate, work with the Democratic majority and hold off until she proves herself to be an effective officeholder.

I don’t know of anything she has accomplished of significance as New York’s junior senator in her first term. She has no foreign affairs experience, nor budgetary or financial background, and has managed nothing of consequence in her life. Others with more qualifications and firsthand experience are already announced candidates. Her candidacy alone will ignite the conservatives across the nation and could indeed help lead to a Republican victory in 2008.

Why is Clinton’s change of position on Iraq being used against her? Criticizing her for making the right decision does not make any sense. If she continued supporting our current administration’s position, it would be understandable to use that against her. If we expect the many who voted to support a war based on lies to change their views, then why not her? Hopefully more of our nation’s leaders and their supporters will change their positions in the near future as well.
