The R&B; singer and actress Brandy was involved in a fatal, four-car freeway accident in the Sherman Oaks area last month that started when her sport utility vehicle rear-ended the victim’s car, police said Wednesday.

Brandy, the 27-year-old former star of the TV comedy “Moesha,” was not injured but the driver of the car she struck with her 2007 Land Rover in the Dec. 30 crash died, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The victim was Awatef Aboudihaj, 38, a married mother of one, CHP spokesman Leland Tang said.

The accident occurred on the northbound 405 Freeway, just south of the 101 Freeway.

No charges or arrests have been made in connection with the accident, and no formal determination has been made about what caused the crash, which was first reported by the celebrity news website TMZ.com.

Tang said there was no evidence of “wanton disregard” of safety by Brandy and that, if any charge is eventually filed against her, it would be no more than a misdemeanor count. He said she stopped at the scene and fully cooperated with officers.

Tang said that neither the performer, whose full name is Brandy Norwood, nor other witnesses realized the severity of the injuries to Aboudihaj in the chain-reaction accident.

A statement issued by Brandy’s publicist said: “She wishes to publicly express her condolences to the family of the deceased.”

The singer-actress was alone in her vehicle and no alcohol or drugs were involved, Tang said.

Brandy told officers she was driving about 65 mph before the crash.
