Wolves in the northern Rockies will be removed from the endangered species list within the next year, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials said in Billings, a move that would open the population to trophy hunting.

The agency is also working to remove from the list a population of wolves in the Great Lakes region. The animals were declared at risk in 1974, shortly after passage of the Endangered Species Act.
