For the record, Brodeur shuts out Lightning

Martin Brodeur turned an outstanding performance into another milestone.

Brodeur made 28 saves, extending his NHL record for consecutive 30-win seasons to 11, and the New Jersey Devils defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning, 2-0, Friday night at Tampa, Fla.

Brodeur (30-13-4) also recorded his NHL-best ninth shutout this season and the 89th of his career.

Nashville 3, Chicago 1 -- Vernon Fiddler scored the game-winning goal with 2:21 left in the third period at Chicago. Scott Nichol had an empty-net goal with 42.6 seconds left for the Predators, who lead the NHL with 73 points and 35 victories.

Columbus 3, Buffalo 2 -- Dan Fritsche scored the decisive goal on a rebound midway through the third period at Columbus, Ohio. The Blue Jackets, who entered the third period trailing, 2-1, improved to 3-22 when behind after two periods.

Carolina 6, Washington 2 -- Alexander Ovechkin scored his team-leading 30th goal for the Capitals, but it wasn’t enough at Raleigh, N.C. Washington is one point ahead of last-place Florida in the Southeast Division.

Atlanta 5, New York Islanders 4 -- Ilya Kovalchuk scored his second goal of the game with 2:01 left in overtime at Atlanta, giving the Thrashers the victory.

St. Louis 2, Detroit 1 -- Bill Guerin scored 1:09 into overtime off a rebound to lift the Blues at St. Louis. After the puck came off the pads of goalie Chris Osgood, Guerin slapped it into the net from about five feet away.

Minnesota 2, Calgary 1 -- Pavol Demitra and Petteri Nummelin scored in the shootout at St. Paul, Minn. It was the Wild’s league-best eighth shootout win.

Phoenix 5, Colorado 4 -- Ladislav Nagy scored the only goal in the shootout at Denver as the Coyotes ended a seven-game losing streak to the Avalanche.

Pittsburgh 4, Dallas 3 -- Erik Christensen scored the only goal in the shootout at Dallas. Pittsburgh improved to 2-5 in shootouts and dropped Dallas to 5-2.

San Jose 5, Edmonton 1 -- Patrick Marleau had two goals and an assist for the Sharks at Edmonton. San Jose moved to within two points of the Pacific Division-leading Ducks.
