David Bulow pounced on a mishandled corner kick to score in the 31st minute Tuesday, and the Richmond Kickers pulled off the biggest upset in franchise history with a 1-0 U.S. Open Cup victory over the Galaxy at Richmond, Va.

The Kickers, second division champions from the United Soccer Leagues, will play the winner of the Chicago Fire and the Carolina RailHawks in the quarterfinals.

Tuesday’s game was the Galaxy’s 12th Open Cup game against non-Major League Soccer opposition. In the previous 11 games, the Galaxy was 11-1 and had outscored opponents, 34-9. Its only previous loss to a non-MLS club came in 2004 when it fell, 1-0, to the Minnesota Thunder.

The Galaxy was without midfielders Cobi Jones and Chris Klein. Jones was sent off in the second half of the Galaxy’s last Open Cup game against New York on May 8 and was serving a one-game suspension. Klein was ineligible to play for the club in the Open Cup this season after already having played for Real Salt Lake.
