* at Seattle 3, Detroit 2: Adrian Beltre hit a two-run single and stayed alive on the basepaths long enough to allow the go-ahead run to score in a wacky sequence that sent the Mariners to their fourth win in a row and ended the Tigers’ five-game winning streak.

* at Boston 7, Toronto 4: David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez combined for five hits and five runs batted in, and Tim Wakefield won his third consecutive start. Wakefield (10-8) scattered nine hits and walked none in six innings to help the Red Sox end a three-game losing streak.

* Chicago 9, at Baltimore 7: Jim Thome’s 487th homer ignited a four-run first inning, and the White Sox held off a late charge by the Orioles. The White Sox, who began an 11-game trip with their third consecutive victory, have won 11 of 16.

* New York 7, at Tampa Bay 3: Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter and Bobby Abreu homered to back starter Andy Pettitte. Tampa Bay has lost 14 of 15.

* at Minnesota 6, Oakland 2: Michael Cuddyer tied a career high with four hits, and the Twins took advantage of Chad Gaudin’s lack of control for the victory. Gaudin (8-4) walked five batters -- four in the first inning.
