PBS garners 22 nods for news Emmys
PBS collected 22 nominations Tuesday to lead the field in the running for the 28th annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards.
CBS followed with 19 nominations, ABC received 15, and NBC got 14.
The only other outlets with more than two nominations were CNN and HBO, which each garnered six, and Cinemax and the History Channel, which each nabbed five. Fox News Channel didn’t enter the competition.
PBS series accounted for the bulk of the noncommercial network’s nominations, with five for “Nature,” four for “POV” and three each for “American Experience” and “Nova.”
Twelve of CBS’ 19 nominations went to various segments of “60 Minutes,” while “NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams” logged nine of NBC’s 14 nominations.
“This year’s nominations are as good as any we’ve seen in years,” Bill Small, chairman of the News and Documentary Emmy Awards, said in a statement. “Though I keep reading criticism of television journalism, this year’s nominees demonstrate that the fields of broadcast journalism and television documentary filmmaking are thriving.”
The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will announce winners Sept. 24 in a ceremony in New York City.
