HIT AND MISS
* Hit: In mid-afternoon on No. 11, the Open tournament came unusually alive when former champion John Daly holed a 50-yard wedge shot for an eagle, went to five under par and beamed. He jumped over Paul McGinley and into the lead.
* Miss: Minutes later, on No. 12, Daly had about a 20-inch putt to save bogey after driving into a horrible lie in the right rough and chipping back into the fairway. It lipped out, and Daly fell apart with a triple-bogey 8 on No. 14, a bogey 5 on No. 15, a bogey 4 on No. 16, a bogey 5 on No. 18, a 74 for the round and, ultimately, a tie for 78th place.
