It’s another Busch Series victory for Edwards

Carl Edwards had the car to beat under green, and that was enough to win the wreck-filled NASCAR Busch Series Dover 200 Saturday at Dover International Speedway in Delaware.

Edwards, who started eighth in a Ford, led a race-high 122 laps.

“You can’t lose a race with a car that good,” he said. “It worked out. It was great.”

Edwards, who passed Matt Kenseth with 13 laps left, extended his overall points lead and won for the third time this season. He’s 472 points ahead of Kevin Harvick.

Almost from the start, the race was a mess, with no more than a handful of laps ever being completed before the first caution flag came out because of an accident. In all, there were 11 cautions, the last coming on the final lap.

It seemed all the accidents would help Kenseth after he stayed on the track late and opted not to change his tires when all the front-runners pitted.

Even with all the flags slowing the race, Kenseth couldn’t keep up with Edwards, Denny Hamlin and Scott Wimmer, who all had fresh tires.

Hamlin, the pole-sitter, finished second. Wimmer was third. Casey Mears and Kenseth rounded out the top five.

Helio Castroneves, coming off a third-place finish last Sunday in the Indianapolis 500, won the pole for today’s ABC Supply/A.J. Foyt 225 at the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wis. He had a fast lap of 171.071 mph. Scott Dixon was second at 169.266.

Rip Michels and Travis Thirkettle made contact while battling for the lead on the 14th lap, but Michels went on to win the 50-lap ACDelco Super Late Model feature at Irwindale Speedway. It was Michels’ fifth consecutive win. Thirkettle finished second, 0.474 of a second behind.

Mat Mladin, starting from the pole at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., won his fourth consecutive AMA Superbike race. He edged Ben Spies, his Yoshimura Suzuki teammate and the defending series champion, by 3.158 seconds.

Briggs loses WBO title to Ibragimov

Shannon Briggs’ hold on the World Boxing Organization heavyweight title slipped away at the quick hands of Sultan Ibragimov, who easily won a unanimous decision at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

The left-handed Russian consistently landed left leads and often followed with more quick lefts. Meanwhile, Briggs, the only American with a share of the heavyweight titles, was pawing and posturing, rarely throwing any hard punches.

USC’s Lovemark wins NCAA title

Freshman Jamie Lovemark shot his second consecutive six-under-par 64 to erase a four-stroke deficit over the final nine holes and become the first USC men’s golfer to win the NCAA individual championship in 26 years at the Division I championships at the Williamsburg, Va.

Lovemark finished with a nine-under 271. Clemson’s Kyle Stanley (69) finished second at seven-under 273. Stanford’s Rob Grube (71) was third at six-under 274.

The last Trojan to win the NCAA individual title was Ron Commans in 1981. The only other USC player to win was Scott Simpson, who won back-to-back titles in 1976 and 1977.

Stanford won the team title with an 11-under 1,109. Top-ranked Georgia finished second at one-over 1,121. UCLA finished seventh (its fourth top-10 finish in the last five years) at 10-over 1,130.

Fan attack mars European qualifier

An enraged Danish fan marred a European 2008 qualifying match in Copenhagen when he ran on the field and tried to punch the referee, possibly costing Denmark a point and handing three to Sweden.

Denmark’s rally from a three-goal deficit at home to earn a 3-3 draw may be voided by the fan’s attempted attack of Herbert Fandel, who had just awarded a penalty and sent off Danish defender Christian Poulsen in the 89th minute.

The fan was prevented from striking Fandel by Danish players, but the referee walked off the field and abandoned the match.

Danish officials initially said that UEFA had awarded the game to Sweden as a 3-0 forfeit. But UEFA officials said they were waiting the referee’s report before making a ruling.
