Hatcher is again a hit at his trade

So, what do you have to say about Mickey Hatcher now?

All the Angels hitting coach who was excoriated on radio talk shows and Internet message boards earlier this season has been hearing recently is the crack of his team’s sizzling bats.

After batting .315 with 12 homers and averaging six runs during a 10-game homestand, the Angels packed even heavier lumber for their interleague trip. They scored 10 runs Friday and then piled it on again Saturday night with a 9-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

“A lot of it is that we play for a ‘W’ and not our stats,” Hatcher said. “That’s the thing that we preach here, that every game everybody’s got the same stats that day.”

The Angels are getting production from their entire lineup, including a trio of players -- Chone Figgins, Garret Anderson and Howie Kendrick -- coming off lengthy injury layoffs. They’ve had at least 10 hits in five consecutive games, including 23 on Monday, 17 on Friday and 18 on Saturday.

“There’s critics all over the world, and it’s funny that they want to get rid of half of these guys and do all this stuff, and now these guys are producing,” Hatcher said.

What about the criticism directed at Hatcher?

“I can’t get caught up in that,” he said. “I just do my job. I work my [tail] off, and sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn’t. Those guys in that room over there [in the clubhouse], they determine what your future is going to be.”

Jered Weaver doesn’t mind serving as a courier for his brother Jeff, considering the goods he gets to deliver. The Angels pitcher received a replica World Series ring and a commemorative necklace from St. Louis on Saturday, and he expects to take possession of the genuine diamond-encrusted championship ring before the Angels leave town.

Jeff Weaver couldn’t pick up the jewelry he earned for helping the Cardinals win their first World Series title in 25 years because he signed with the Seattle Mariners in the off-season. The replica ring will go to his father and the necklace to his mother.

With the designated hitter spot unavailable this weekend, Reggie Willits was the odd man out of the starting lineup Friday and Saturday. Yet he played in both games, appearing as a pinch-hitter Friday and as a defensive replacement for Anderson on Saturday.

“I don’t have any expectations or anything like that,” Willits said of being removed from the lineup despite his consistency. “It’s just one of those things that I’m going to try to stay ready, because being in the National League, you could be in there any time with the double switches and hitting for the pitchers. I’m going to try to stay ready.”

Anderson left in the fifth inning after experiencing tightness in the right hip flexor that forced him to sit out 34 games this season. He probably will get the day off today.... First baseman Casey Kotchman departed in the sixth after he suffered a bruised right elbow when he was hit by a pitch. X-rays were negative and Kotchman is listed as day to day.... In his first rehabilitation game with triple-A Salt Lake, Maicer Izturis was two for four with a walk Friday.... Juan Rivera, recovering from a broken left leg, has resumed throwing and running on a treadmill in Arizona.
