Abe Thompson had a goal and an assist to lead FC Dallas to a 3-1 victory over the Galaxy on Saturday night at Pizza Hut Park in a game marred by a serious injury to Dallas forward Kenny Cooper.

Thompson broke a 1-1 tie in the 54th minute, firing a penalty kick into the right corner of the net. FC Dallas was awarded the kick after Galaxy rookie defender Ty Harden was called for tackling Dominic Oduro from behind and inside the penalty box.

Drew Moor scored a goal for Dallas (6-5-1) in the 73rd minute, angling a header inside the right post off Dax McCarty’s free kick.

Rookie Robbie Findley scored his second goal of the season for the Galaxy (1-4-3).

The victory was the second of the year for first-place Dallas over the Galaxy, ensuring that it will win the season series from L.A. for the first time since 2000. Dallas also has defeated L.A. six consecutive times at home.

Frustration bubbled over for the Galaxy in the 89th minute when veteran defender Tyrone Marshall was issued a red card for a foul on Cooper. It was the second time in the game that Marshall had fouled Cooper and it resulted in the Dallas forward’s breaking his right leg.

“Kenny’s a guy that fights through those things and I knew it was serious when he couldn’t continue,” Dallas Coach Steve Morrow said. “So, it takes the shine off a good night for us and a good win. The thoughts of all the players right now are with Kenny. We’re obviously devastated for him and it’s a big loss for the whole team as well.”
