Scott Gorgen pitched UC Irvine to a 1-0 victory over Wichita State in the opener of their NCAA Division I super regional in front of a record-crowd of 8,153 at Eck Stadium at Wichita, Kan.

The victory put the Anteaters (44-15-1) one win from their first College World Series appearance. Game 2 of the best-of-three series is today at 10 a.m. PDT.

Gorgen picked up his fourth consecutive complete-game victory and improved to 12-2. The sophomore right-hander scattered eight hits -- all singles -- and walked three while striking out seven. He threw 141 pitches, 88 of them strikes.

The Anteaters scored the only run Gorgen would need in the top of the eighth inning. With two out, reliever Andy Womack walked Cody Cipriano, who took third on a bloop single by Matt Morris. Womack then walked Bryan Peterson to load the bases.

The Shockers (53-21) brought in closer Noah Krol to face Sean Madigan. Madigan hit a hard grounder off Krol’s leg. It bounced away, allowing Cipriano to score from third.

Arizona State 4, Mississippi 3 -- The Sun Devils (47-13) scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning at Winkles Field in Tempe to win the opener of the super regional. Brett Wallace singled to center with two out, driving in pinch-runner Ryan Sontag with the winning run.

Mississippi State 8, Clemson 5 -- A day after his home run lifted the Bulldogs (38-20) to a victory over the Tigers, Mitch Moreland helped them earn a trip to the College World Series for the first time since 1998. He combined with Aaron Weatherford to pitch 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to clinch the win at Starkville, Miss.

Rice 5, Texas A&M; 2 -- The Owls (54-12) advanced to the College World Series for the second straight year. They led, 2-0, after three innings with Joe Savery leading the way at Houston.

Savery singled home Brian Friday in the first inning. In the third, he hit Kyle Thebeau’s 2-1 pitch for an opposite-field homer to left.

Oklahoma State 3, Louisville 2 -- Keanon Simon’s run-scoring single in the top of the 12th inning gave the Cowboys (42-20) the victory over the Cardinals (45-22) at Louisville, Ky., and forced a third game in the best-of-three series.

Oregon State vs. Michigan, ppd. -- Steady rain in Corvallis, Ore., forced the first game of the best-of-three series to be rescheduled for today. The second game is slated for Monday.

South Carolina at North Carolina -- The game at Chapel Hill, N.C., was suspended in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Tar Heels leading, 8-5, because of lightning. It will resume today.
