Beats to bring the crowd to its feet

Samba, axe, pagode, samba reggae! What are they? A few of Brazil’s most body-rousing, contemporary musical expressions. And they’ll be simmering nonstop at Brazilian Summer Festival: From Rio to Bahia, the annual festival of all-join-in rhythmic excitement. The headliners -- Grupo Fundo de Quintal -- are among the founders of pagode party music, enhancing traditional samba with stirring percussion and the addition of such offbeat instruments as the banjo. Also on the bill, Lula and Afro Brazil add a colorful collection of Afro-Brazilian music and dance -- all of it designed to get the crowd up and moving at the onstage dance areas.

Brazilian Summer Festival: From Rio to Bahia, the Ford Amphitheatre, 2580 Cahuenga Blvd., E., Los Angeles. 7 p.m. Sunday. $35 and $45; children $12. (323) 461-3673.
