Old Globe lists major renovations
It’s “extreme makeover” time for San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre. The 72-year-old Balboa Park arts institution -- consisting of the Old Globe Theatre, the outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre and the small Cassius Carter Centre Stage -- is slated for major renovation, beginning in June 2008.
When the dust clears, the company will occupy the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, a four-level facility designed by Seattle-based LMN Architects that will include a replacement small theater, education center and a redesigned entrance plaza.
Plans call for the theater complex and 14,000-square-foot Copley Plaza to retain the Old Globe’s Elizabethan architectural style. The Cassius Carter Centre Stage will be razed and replaced by a 250-seat arena stage -- the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre -- which will be slightly bigger than the Cassius Carter.
The theater’s education programs will be housed in the new 6,200-square-foot Karen and Donald Cohn Education Center.
The Globe has raised $52 million toward its five-year capital campaign goal of $75 million. Of that amount, $10 million was kicked in by developer Conrad Prebys and $20 million came from theater supporters Donald and Darlene Shiley. The Cohns and Whites contributed $5 million and $6 million, respectively.
During the renovation, programming at the Old Globe Theatre and the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre will be unaffected. With the razing of the Cassius Carter, the company may use an alternate venue for its third-stage offerings.
Construction is expected to be completed by September 2009.
