Reward offered in slaying of 4 dolphins

A federal agency has offered a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever killed four long-beaked common dolphins, whose carcasses washed up on beaches in Carlsbad and Oceanside from May 29 to June 5.

The dolphins had been shot, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Fisheries Service.

Dolphins are protected by the 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Penalties for killing one include jail time and a fine of up to $20,000.
