The Cup’s job comes with travel

Looks as if Lord Stanley’s Cup is having quite a summer.

Since the Ducks won the Cup on June 6, it has been boating on Newport Bay, gone for a spin in Teemu Selanne’s convertible, caught some rays by the pool and hung out on a jetty in Newport Beach.

Oh, and it was used as a dog food dish for defenseman Sean O’Donnell’s black lab, Buddy.

The Cup’s summer is being chronicled in the Stanley Cup Journal at www.hhof.com, the website of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

One entry documented a trip to the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, where a nurse insisted the Cup had to be sterilized before it was taken into the room of a young cancer patient being kept in isolation.

“How do you sterilize the Stanley Cup?” Selanne asked. “We use an alcohol-based antiseptic,” the nurse told him.

“Wouldn’t be the first time the Stanley Cup was covered in alcohol,” left wing Brad May said.

Too much information

Like just about everybody, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has a blog.

This month, he used it to write about his colonoscopy.

Honest.

“Well this morning was the morning. I had officially lost 4 pounds to the laxative over the past 24 hours and was surprisingly not hungry after going without food for the past 24 hours as I got to the hospital at the prime time of 7 a.m.”

The procedure, Cuban concluded afterward, was “easy and breezy.”

We’d give you the link, but do you want to know any more?

Atlanta Braves Manager Bobby Cox was tossed for the 131st time in a 2-1 loss to Detroit on Saturday, tying the record for ejections set by John McGraw.

Cox was thrown out after coming to the defense of catcher Brian McCann, ejected for arguing after he struck out looking in the bottom of the ninth.

Cox’s comment to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “He was our only [bleeping] catcher we had left.”

In the doghouse

Police in Stillwater, Okla., arrested Oklahoma State basketball player Obi Muonelo on a misdemeanor complaint of being inside a bar while under 21.

Muonelo, 19, was arrested just before 1 a.m. Saturday inside the Dirty Dog Tavern.

The sophomore averaged 10 points a game last season. We’re thinking in Stillwater that’s enough for folks to know what you look like and how old you are.

Here’s the kicker

The Sunday Times of London reports a USC professor is planning to invite David Beckham to speak at a seminar next year on the role of sport in diplomacy.

Nicholas Cull, a British-born professor of public diplomacy, said Beckham already is cited in coursework as an example of the influence of athletes.

“People who don’t follow football don’t appreciate what a globally significant figure Beckham is even now with his career in transition,” Cull told the paper.

Maybe Beckham will accept if someone tells him USC is a football school.

And finally

Change has come to Wimbledon, where among other things the roof has been removed from Centre Court in preparation for the installation of a retractable roof by 2009.

Andy Roddick joked that the renovations are befuddling to his coach, Jimmy Connors, who won Wimbledon twice and played in six finals.

“He walks around, he goes, ‘I don’t know where the hell I’m going in this place anymore.’ ”
