Uruguay upset by Peru, 3-0

Peru won the opening match of the Copa America soccer tournament, upsetting 14-time champion Uruguay, 3-0, Tuesday night on goals by Miguel Villalta, Juan Carlos Marino and Paolo Guerrero.

Villalta headed in the first goal off Jefferson Farfan’s crossing pass in the 27th minute after a corner kick, Carlos Marino beat goalkeeper Fabian Carini from 25 yards in the 70th and Guerrero scored off a pass from Andres Mendoza in the 89th minute.

In the second match, with the presidents of both nations looking on, Bolivia rallied to tie Venezuela, 2-2, getting the equalizer when Juan Carlos Arce tipped in the ball in the 83rd minute.

With Venezuela seeking its first victory in the tournament since 1967, Giancarlo Maldondo put the hosts ahead in the 21st minute, but Bolivia tied the score in the 39th when Jaime Moreno’s shot deflected in off Alejandro Cichero.

Ricardo Paez gave Venezuela a 2-1 lead in the 56th.

The United States, an invited guest to the championship of South America, opens play Thursday against Argentina in Maracaibo.
