The Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees has voted unanimously to stop paying the legal fees of former Supt. James Fleming, officials said.

Fleming resigned in August after a 15-year tenure in the 51,000-student district beset by a series of controversies including an Orange County Grand Jury probe; a raid of district headquarters by the district attorney’s office; allegations that Fleming kept an “enemies list”; and disputes over attendance boundaries, a new school’s location, portable classrooms and a new administration center.

Trustees, who agreed in September to pay Fleming’s $400-per-hour legal fees related to the grand jury investigation, have to date paid more than $5,000.
