A student suffered minor injuries in an after-school shooting Wednesday on the grounds of Centennial High in Compton, authorities said.

The student, identified by officials only as male and a junior at the school, was struck in the left elbow by a bullet and taken to a hospital for treatment.

Sunny Yu, a spokeswoman for the Compton Unified School District, said several shots were fired in an outdoors eating area after an argument between several nonstudents who came onto the campus and another group of youths, including the student who was wounded.

The incident occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m., about an hour after classes were dismissed for the day because of a previously scheduled early closing at the 1,300-student school.

The campus was immediately put on lockdown, and students in after-school activities were sent home.

Yu said campus police detained five witnesses for questioning but made no arrests.
