Gene Oliver, a catcher who played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs during a 10-year major league career that began in 1959, died Saturday in Rock Island, Ill., of complications after lung surgery. He was 71.
