Concerned that the site of a redevelopment project might be contaminated with depleted uranium, City Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske said Monday that she would request a city report on whether the area is environmentally safe.

Schipske said she was requesting the evaluation from the city manager’s office on the Douglas Park project, a mixed-used development on the site of a former McDonnell Douglas plant at Carson Street and Lakewood Boulevard. She said her concern stemmed from a report in a local newspaper, the Beachcomber.
