Texas A&M; advances with 58-50 win
Danielle Gant matched a career high by scoring 24 points Saturday in the Galen Center to lead Texas A&M; to a 58-50 victory over Texas Arlington in the opening round of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament.
Gant, a sophomore who also led the Aggies with 14 rebounds, scored 20 points in the second half and made eight of 10 shots overall in helping Texas A&M; (25-6) advance to the second round of the Dallas Regional.
The fourth-seeded Aggies will meet fifth-seeded Atlantic 10 Conference champion George Washington (27-3) on Monday night in the Galen Center.
“Everybody says we play an ugly style of basketball at times,” Texas A&M; Coach Gary Blair said, “but we find a way to win and that’s what you saw.”
Texas Arlington (24-9) had won 19 consecutive games, led at halftime and outrebounded the Aggies, 45-32, taking a staggering 27 offensive rebounds. But the Southland Conference champions could not overcome 21.5% shooting.
Terra Wallace led the Mavericks with 18 points but missed 22 of 26 shots. Ashley Bobb, who had 10 points and 15 rebounds, missed nine of 11.
George Washington 76, Boise State 67 -- The Colonials, who believed they should have been seeded higher after winning 19 of their last 20 regular-season games, opened the game with a 19-0 run, built their lead to 27 points and cruised past the 12th-seeded Western Athletic Conference champions.
Their 6-foot-4 sophomore center, Jessica Adair, had 15 points and a career-high 21 rebounds. “When she gets rolling,” Coach Joe McKeown said, “she’s one of the premier post players in college basketball.”
Reserve guard Nadia Begay led Boise State (24-9) with 26 points, making a school-record eight of 14 three-point shots.
