Activists arrested before protests
Pakistani police have detained hundreds of opposition activists ahead of protests planned today against President Pervez Musharraf’s removal of the Supreme Court’s chief judge, opposition leaders said.
The government said it had no information about the alleged detentions. The nationwide protests are the latest in response to Musharraf’s removal of Judge Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry on March 9.
Musharraf accused the judge of abusing authority, but opposition groups say he is trying to tame the court before elections.
