William Panzer, 64, a producer best known for the “Highlander” fantasy films and spinoff television series, died March 18 in Boise, Idaho, after falling while ice skating. The cause of death was an aneurysm, said his wife, Priscilla Panzer.

The original 1986 “Highlander” film about an immortal Scottish warrior locked in a centuries-long death match starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery.

The film was not a box-office success but gained a loyal following after it was released on video. “Highlander” conventions are held around the world.

“Highlander” was followed by three sequels, with a fourth to be released this year; three television series, including an animated version; and a videogame. Panzer also contributed to the screenplays for three of the films.

Born in 1942 in New York City, Panzer attended Princeton University before graduating from New York University’s film program. He started by making television commercials.

After moving to Los Angeles, he teamed up with Peter Davis and produced “The Death Collector” (1976) starring Joe Pesci. He was also a co-producer on more than a dozen movies, including director Sam Peckinpah’s final film, “The Osterman Weekend” (1983).
