After the fire, how are they?

Many readers have asked whether homes and gardens featured recently in the Home section were affected by the Southern California fires. An update:

--

The Hubbells: The Sept. 6 cover story (“A Fire’s Survivor”) featured the home of artist James Hubbell, who with wife Anne had rebuilt their piece of folk architecture following the 2003 Cedar fire. The Hubbells’ son Drew said the Witch fire started less than four miles away from his parents’ property in Wynola, outside Julian. Though the home was without power or water last week, the property was spared a repeat of disaster.

The Cadenheads: A Sept. 13 story (“From the Ashes, New Blooms Rise”) featured Keli and Dan Cadenhead, whose garden in Alpine burned in the 2003 Cedar fire. The couple says that the Witch fire came within two miles but that their house and garden were untouched by it.

Bob Haggstrom: The recent Malibu fires were four miles from the home of Bob Haggstrom, whose coversion of 9 parched acres into a lush oasis was featured Oct. 11 (“Faking Paradise”). Months ago, he cleared dead branches, leaves and other flammable debris, and he had a well dug so he could access his own water. After seeing flames coming over the hill, he decided to install a system that would release fire-surpressing foam throughout his remodeled house.
