Dressing ‘Sex’ again

Glam-LOVING costume designer Patricia Field might be busy conjuring up outfits for the “Cashmere Mafia,” but she hasn’t left behind the foursome who first brought high fashion to the small screen via her quirky, out-of-the-box styling. Field signed on to outfit Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte once again for “Sex and the City: The Movie,” the cinematic spin-off of the HBO series.

The film is scheduled to be released May 30, but with a gazillion on-location photos already posted on the Internet, it’s hardly a national secret what Sarah Jessica Parker and the gals will be wearing. And given that Parker’s oft-zany ensembles were part and parcel of enjoying the TV show, the photos have the potential to drain a bit of magic from the film.

But even more egregious than robbing the film of its fashion surprises, the photo spoilers (which were sanctioned, if not commissioned) have also clued us in to the film’s closely guarded plot. Parker has been snapped in a tiered cream-puff of a wedding dress that looks very John Galliano -- with Chris Noth (Mr. Big) milling around in a flawless tuxedo nearby. Kristen Davis’ reproductively challenged character, Charlotte, looks as if she’s finally pregnant, with shots of her bulging belly in a polka-dot shift posted on every fan site for miles.

A source from New Line features, which teamed up with HBO for the film, hinted that the photos might not indicate what actually happens in the movie. But did you ever see a wavy-screened dream sequence on the TV show? Me neither. Still, the film’s creators probably don’t have much to worry about. The photos are everywhere, because the devoted cult of “Sex and the City” can hardly contain its excitement.
