ROOMY ‘N’ DURABLE

The bulky, black laptop bags of the past don’t cut it anymore for female road warriors. They want something that makes a fashion statement -- or at least reflects their tastes. The travel accessories industry has obliged: Each new season brings a broader selection of colors, shapes and styles. “Women’s bags -- many designed by women, for women -- resemble high-end fashion accessories,” says Michele Marini Pittenger, president of the Travel Goods Assn. “We’re seeing bright, playful tones, including pastels and polka dots, along with the more serious, businesslike colors.” Six female members of The Times staff teamed up to test some new models. Here’s what they thought.

First look: Solo’s Urban Vertical Messenger bag is roomy, durable (made of canvas and corduroy) and cool-looking -- sort of Army Surplus gets wired. Its laptop compartment, capable of holding a 15.4-inch laptop, is well-padded with a Velcro closure to keep the computer from moving around in the bag. There’s an MP3 pocket and pass-through hole for headphone wires in front so you can listen to music in transit with your digital audio player safely tucked inside. It is available in black and olive.

Likes and yikes: This capacious shoulder bag has plenty of room for books, files and electronic accessories. But it feels heavy and ungainly when full, not to mention hard on the shoulders and back. An adaptable strap that makes it possible to carry the bag like a backpack would be a big help.
