Mayor warns against any plan to limit police hiring

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said Tuesday that he would veto any City Council action that would divert money from his police hiring plan.
Councilman Bernard C. Parks, chairman of the council’s budget committee, has proposed capping police hiring at 226 this fiscal year to help shore up the city’s shaky finances.
The council is scheduled to take up the matter at today’s meeting. The level of support for Parks’ proposal was unclear.
