Nathalie Gleboff, 88; former leader of School of American Ballet
Nathalie Gleboff, 88, a former executive director of the School of American Ballet, which is affiliated with the New York City Ballet, died Sept. 30 from pneumonia in Santa Barbara, the school announced.
She was the last of the women of Russian background hired by George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein to run the school or its various activities since its founding in 1934, the New York Times reported.
Born in Romania to Russian parents and reared in Paris, Gleboff had a degree in philosophy from the Sorbonne.
She moved to New York after World War II when her husband, Nicholas Gleboff, became a United Nations interpreter, according to the Times’ obituary.
In 1959, Gleboff joined the school to administer scholarships funded by the Ford Foundation.
By 1970, she was the school’s associate director and served as executive director from 1985 to 2004.
