* at Buffalo 6, Atlanta 0: Ryan Miller made 20 saves for his fifth career shutout, Tim Connolly and Brian Campbell each had a goal and two assists and the Sabres got their first win of the season in three games. The Thrashers have lost their first four games.

* at Toronto 8, N.Y. Islanders 1: Mats Sundin set two team records on one play and the Maple Leafs rebounded from a 7-1 loss at home to Carolina two nights earlier. Sundin scored his 390th goal for his 917th point to break the ties he’d shared with Darryl Sittler.

* Carolina 5, at Ottawa 3: Erik Cole scored twice and Chad Larose had three assists, helping the Hurricanes end the Senators’ season-opening winning streak at five games. Cam Ward stopped 27 shots and Matt Cullen and Rod Brind’Amour also scored for Carolina, which improved to 3-1-1. Dany Heatley scored his fifth goal for Ottawa, which fell one game short of matching its best start ever.

* at Florida 3, New Jersey 0: Tomas Vokoun stopped 28 shots and the Panthers ended a season-opening losing streak at three games. Rostislav Olesz, Olli Jokinen and Nathan Horton scored for Florida. Martin Brodeur made 28 saves for the Devils, whose 1-3 start is their worst since the 2001-02 season.

* Phoenix 6, at Nashville 3: Fredrik Sjostrom scored two goals and Derek Morris, Martin Hanzal and Radim Vrbata each had a goal and an assist for the Coyotes.
